What’s it about?
Set in the summer of 1993 and semi-autobiographical, Trick is a slice of life in a dead-end town; gritty and honest but also full of charm and humour. A compelling coming of age novel about a black teenager trying to find his place in a white world – the lengths that he goes to fit in and his search for who he really is. Even though they escape with more money than they’d anticipated, it is a botched job and cataclysmic events unfold. To make matters worse, Kelly Jenkins, the girl Trick has been in love with since he was seven years old, is planning her escape from their small town. If he doesn’t tell her how he feels now, he risks losing her forever. A gritty fast-paced story full of suspense and intrigue, Trick is about friendship, love, and a good kid’s determination to make something of his life, against all the odds.
Who is the author?
Sean Hancock was born in Oxford, England. He lived in London and Kenya before his family settled in Devon where Sean spent his formative years. He studied Ancient History at Cardiff University. After graduating he got a job as a researcher in television and went on to have a successful career in the media industry. In 2010, Sean joined the BBC as a commissioning editor in entertainment. Among other notable shows during his four years with the corporation, Sean commissioned and executive produced The Revolution Will Be Televised, which won the BAFTA for Best Comedy Programme. In 2014, Sean’s career took him to Los Angeles where he lives with his wife Simone and works for Netflix. You can connect with him on Twitter.
